LR PARKVIEW SLIPS MARION

SEARCY --- Marion senior guard Ronnie Townsend collected an offensive rebound and went straight back up, finishing a layup through contact. His ensuing free throw was true, and after the ebbs and flows of a state-tournament basketball game, Marion had a 41-39 lead with 5:18 left in regulation over Little Rock Parkview. But the Parkview Patriots made enough plays down the stretch, outscoring the Marion Patriots 13-6 in the game's final five minutes to earn a 52-47 victory in the opening round of the Class 5A state tournament in Searcy. Marion's season ends at 19-5 overall and the Patriots earned a conference runner-up finish or better for the sixth straight season. Townsend led Marion with 12 points, while LaDaryl Robinson finished with 10 points, and Jalen White scored nine. White and Robinson led Marion the Pats with five rebounds apiece, while junior guard Lyndell Buckingham led the way with four assists. Parkview got a game-high 18 points from senior Clemson signee Dallas Thomas, while B.J. Riley scored all nine of his points in the fourth quarter. LR Parkview earned an early 10-3 lead in the first period, but Marion got back into the mix by scoring the final six points of the opening frame. The spurt started when White hit a free throw, followed by a Buckingham layup, and when junior Mikell Lewis scored the last three points of the opening period, including a lay-in that beat the buzzer, MHS was within 10-9 after eight minutes. The run rolled into the second stanza as Robinson scored the first six points of the frame, and when Townsend hit a pair of free throws, Marion's lead was 17-10 with 6:23 left in the first half. A Lewis layup pushed Marion ahead 23-16, and MHS enjoyed a 23-20 halftime bulge. Parkview hit Marion with a 12-2 run to open the third period, as Thomas scored 11 of the 12 Parkview points in the run. A Thomas triple gave his team a 35-27 with 2:14 remaining in the third, and PHS led 39-33 after three. Buckingham started the fourth-quarter scoring with an old-fashioned three-point play to get Marion within 39-36, and Townsend scored the next five points, including his dramatic three-point play to give Marion the lead with 5:18 left. From there, Parkview scored the next six on catch-and-shoots from Riley for a 45-41 lead with 2:44 left. On Marion's ensuing possession after the second Riley triple, Lewis rose up and hit a three through contact, and his dramatic four-point play tied the ballgame at 45 with 2:35 left in regulation. But Marion would not score again until there were fewer than six seconds left in the game.
